Spa Regatta - Great Britain in the lead of five classes
MEDEMBLIK, THE NETHERLANDS-(23-5-2003) After three days of racing, it is Great Britain that leads in five classes, namely Finn, 49-er, Star, Tornado and Yngling. France is second country with leading positions in the 470 Men and Mistral Women. In the 470 the Dutch female team De Koning/Berkhout took over the lead, whereas the Dutch male team Coster/Coster dropped to the second place overall. Friday was again a good sailing day with 15 to 20 knots wind. All races are completed according to the racing schedule.

Laser sailor Robert Scheidt (BRA), Mistral surfers Jon-Paul Tobin (NZL) and Lise Vidal from France and the British Yngling team Robertson/Webb/Ayton are totally lonely at the top. Despite the tough competition, they have leaded their classes since the first racing day.

According to the race officer of the Mistral course, Jon-Paul Tobin from New Zealand is superior on his Mistral board. It was remarkable that today there was only one OCS in the Olympic windsurfing class. In the previous days many surfers had a OCS. Today, for Lise Vidal it was more difficult to defend her first position, but she succeeded.

Due to major wind shifts competition in the Yngling class remains exciting. The fleet stays close together, but the classification changes every day. Janneke Hin from the Netherlands: “Sometimes you make the right choice with a perfect wind shift and you can easily pass five boats. But it is also possible to loose many places, if you are at the wrong place of the course.” The British team is very consistent at the top, but the second and third positions have changed every day.

Today’s Champion’s Cup was won by the Dutch Tornado sailor Herbert Dercksen.
